Commercial Drivers (FMCSA)

Inspection and maintenance: the checks before, during, and after a trip

The vehicle has its own set of rules, and most of them land on the driver. What you must satisfy yourself of before you move, what you must write down when the day ends, what an out-of-service sticker actually forbids, and the annual inspection that has to be aboard.

In this chapter

  • Whose duty it is to maintain the vehicle, and why that never becomes a defense for driving an unsafe one
  • The three inspection moments a trip contains, and which of them produces a document
  • What an out-of-service declaration prohibits, and what has to be on the vehicle before it moves at all
