Hours of service: the driving limits

The hours-of-service rules are the part of this rulebook a working driver meets every day. Chapter 1 gave the numbers; this chapter gives the whole envelope — what counts as on duty, how the clocks interact, how a sleeper berth splits them, and which exceptions exempt you from what.

In this chapter

  • What “on duty” actually includes — the definition every hours-of-service limit is measured against
  • The 10-hour reset, the 14-hour window, the 11-hour driving limit and the 30-minute break, and how they interact
  • How the split sleeper berth works, and exactly what the short-haul exceptions do and do not exempt you from
