The knowledge and skills tests

Two tests stand between a permit and a license, and between a license and every endorsement on it. This chapter is what they cover, how a State must build them, what counts as passing, and the narrow routes that substitute for taking one.

In this chapter

  • What you must produce and certify before you can be tested at all
  • The twenty areas of knowledge and the three kinds of skill every applicant must show
  • What passing actually requires — and how failing one component writes a restriction onto the license
